Kevin is a social entrepreneur at heart with a strong background in circular economy spanning over a decade. He holds a Master’s degree in Environmental science and Technology from IHE Delft based in Netherlands and a Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from Maseno university. His love and passion for sustainability issues led him to start his new company Avoruti whose mission is to transform animal manure in to sustainable fertilizer. This was sparked after he established a commercial avocado farm and experienced stunted growth of the trees due to poor soils depleted of nutrients and organic matter. However, the farm’s vicinity was at the heart of one of the biggest pastoralist community in Kenya that had abundant animal manure going to waste. He experimented composting the readily available raw animal manure in to a stable form, which he used on his trees. Within a month, the fruit trees rejuvenated and started growing rapidly with dark green leaves sprouting aggressively. That was the “Aha” moment for him. A quick search revealed that many African soils are depleted with little organic matter and hence farmers are producing meagre harvests threatening food security. This should not happen especially when large volumes of animal manure are readily available and remain uncollected in pastoralists’ communities who have no interest in crop farming.
